33rd Annual Employment Law Update - Richmond

Finding a seat at the table can be a difficult task when it comes to ensuring your organization is able to cope with changes in employment law. Oftentimes the important employment law changes aren’t understood by management until it is too late. The 33rd Annual Employment Law Update will address the most recent legal changes and hot topics, like the impact of the Trump administration on employment laws, to provide attendees with vital information that can help them “find a seat at the table.” Attendees can also earn up to 6 credit hours toward PHR and SPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and 5 PDCs toward the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. In keeping with this year’s theme, one lucky attendee will win a $350 gift card to Williams-Sonoma® to help
sharpen their culinary skills.

Attendees will meet for opening remarks and an overview of the day’s schedule. This session will feature a mock scenario involving that problem employee, Antoine Merriweather. This time, Antoine is determined to keep the salary increase he received in anticipation of the DOL’s increase of the exempt salary threshold Rule that was blocked by a Federal Court.

Attendees may select two morning sessions and two afternoon sessions (materials on all workshops will be provided to each attendee).

This workshop will provide essential baseline information on the most frequently-encountered employment laws. Attendees will learn legal and practical ways for employers to avoid potential liability, and are encouraged to bring their most challenging questions.

Wage-Hour Compliance - “Don't Forget the Tip'
This session will address the current DOL rules and what may change or remain the same under the Trump Administration. Presenters will provide practical wage-hour compliance guidance to help employers avoid the substantial liability that could result from a DOL audit on wage-hour practices.

New Protected Class, LGBT - “Blending the Ingredients”
In the eyes of the EEOC and some aspects of the law in general, a new protected class has perhaps already found a place among those classes protected by anti-discrimination laws. This session will address the current status of LGBT as a protected class under applicable law.

Effective Workplace Harassment Investigations - “Don’t Kiss the Cook”
This session will provide helpful guidelines on how to perform effective workplace harassment investigations. Presenters will provide tips on detecting, addressing, and preventing concerns before they mature into litigation.

12:00 - 1:30 Lunch - “Chef’s Special”
Attendees will hear former Secretary of Commerce and Trade Maurice Jones’ insights on how HR professionals can “find a seat” at the management decision makers' "table.” In addition, Antoine Merriweather returns in another humorous skit. See how he decides to consider outside options to resolve his wage-hour dispute.

Obamacare and Other Benefits Under the New Administration - “Prepped and Marinated”
This session will review a number of timely benefit issues, including how the Employer Mandate and the benefits of “Obamacare” will fare under the new administration.

This session will address practical do’s and don’ts when it comes to the hiring process. Attendees will also learn how to avoid potential discrimination claims as well as important documentation and communication strategies that can be used during the hiring process.

Discipline & Discharge - “Careful with the Cutting Board”
Discipline and discharge decisions are workplace events that often end up in claims. This session features all aspects of progressive and other discipline as well as the termination process. Attendees’ specific questions are encouraged.

Handling Discrimination Charges Under the New EEOC Digital System - “Modern Infusion”
The EEOC’s New Digital Charge System was rolled out in the beginning of the year. This session will provide an overview of that new system and practical guidelines on handling discrimination charges in it.

4:00 - 4:30 Closing Session - “Bon Appétit!”
We will provide a recap of the day’s employment law feast to include final comments from Richmond EEOC Director Daron Calhoun and the return of Antoine Merriweather for a final meeting with his HR manager. This session will conclude with a drawing for the lucky winner of the $350 gift card to Williams-Sonoma ®.
