34th Annual Employment Law Update - Richmond

An office party can be a great way for a company to build morale and show appreciation to their employees. However, office celebrations can also be a breeding ground for inappropriate behavior when alcohol is involved and/or someone decides to become the “life of the party.” The 34th Annual Employment Law Update will highlight these and other employment law risks and provide practical suggestions on risk avoidance. Attendees can also earn up to 6 credit hours toward PHR and SPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and 5 PDCs toward the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. The party won’t end there! One lucky winner will win a $350 gift card to host his/her own "office party" at one of Richmond’s hottest new party venues, The Quirk Hotel.

Attendees may select two morning sessions and two afternoon sessions (materials with essential information on all topics will be provided to attendees in electronic or printed format).

9:00 - 9:35 Opening Session - "Don’t be Tardy for the Party"

Attendees will join the party for opening remarks and an overview of the day’s schedule. DJ Antoine Merriweather will be on hand to spin some beats. This session will also include humorous video clips of inappropriate office party etiquette.

Employment Law 101 - "The Dress Code"

This workshop will provide essential baseline information on the most frequently-encountered employment laws. Attendees will learn legal and practical ways for employers to avoid potential liability, and are encouraged to bring their most challenging questions.

Handling Unemployment Claims - "Invitation Revoked"

This session will provide valuable insight and recommended practices for handling unemployment claims before the Virginia Employment Commission. Attendees will acquire new methods for dealing with this ever-increasing cost of doing business.

This session will provide recommended techniques for effective workplace documentation. Additional information will be provided regarding which types of documentation should be kept and how long these records must be maintained.

25 employment law facts every Virginia H.R. professional needs to know will be addressed in this workshop. Attendees will be encouraged to ask anything about these facts or any other aspect of Virginia employment law.

12:00 - 1:30 Lunch - "Mix & Mingle"

Attendees will hear Mauricio Velásquez, President and CEO of The Diversity Training Group, provide valuable insight about diversity and inclusion in the workplace. In addition, our videos will highlight more examples of what not to do in the workplace.

1:40 - 2:40 & 2:55 - 3:55

Dealing with the Toxic Employee - "Party Animal Beware"

This session will provide recommendations on dealing with the toxic employee and the toxic workplace. Topics such as bullying and managing difficult personalities will be discussed.

Problem Absenteeism - "Hangovers are No Excuse"

Effective policies/practices regarding time off for a variety of health-related reasons will be discussed, including how to handle risks associated with absenteeism — including potential ADA, FMLA, workers’ compensation and USERRA liability.

Discipline & Discharge - "Party Foul"

Discipline and discharge decisions are workplace events that often end up in claims. This session features all aspects of progressive and other discipline as well as the termination process. Attendees’ specific questions are encouraged.

Workplace Harassment Update - "Gender Quake"

Recent sexual harassment charges have led to the downfall of a number of public figures. Public awareness of workplace harassment has intensified and more claims will surely follow. This session will prepare attendees for the aftershocks of this "Gender Quake" and will let attendees know how the EEOC is preparing to handle the projected increase in claims.

4:00 - 4:30 Closing Session - "Last Dance"

We will provide a recap of the day’s party and more entertaining, if not educational, videos. Charlotte EEOC Deputy Director, Thomas Colclough, will also be on hand to provide some insights and there will be a drawing for the lucky winner of an office party for up to fifteen people at the area’s newest party venue, Hilton Norfolk The Main.
